Whether inflammation is the cause or the effect of atrial fibrillation is not clear. This article outlines the role of inflammation on the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation. Activation of neutrophils, through the MPOs, is one of the major determinants of atrial tissue remodeling and pro-fibrotic process.
